Empowerment through backyard farming

Lumka Ngcobo, a 28-year-old resident of Majazana near Orange Farm, faced financial constraints that limited her educational and employment opportunities. SEF became her lifeline, offering an opportunity to learn about backyard farming. Lumka not only cultivated nutritious vegetables but also became an integral part of a community garden, forming meaningful connections with other women in similar situations. The experience enhanced her social and emotional wellbeing, providing practical agricultural skills and a supportive network.

Overcoming unemployment challenges

At 52, Petros Zondeka faced unemployment challenges while supporting a family of 12. SEF’s programme, hosted by the Afrika Tikkun farm in Majazana, provided stable employment and valuable training. Petros reflects on his journey, seeing past odd jobs as steppingstones leading to SEF. The programme has equipped him with skills, restored his dignity, and allowed him to support his family consistently. His story is proof of the transformative impact of community support and sustainable employment opportunities.

From theoretical knowledge to practical experience

Mapula Marokane, 23, originally from Polokwane, shares her journey from theoretical knowledge to practical experience through the SEF programme. A Farming Management student at Motheo Tvet College, Mapula gained work experience that complements her theoretical qualifications. The programme helped her develop essential skills such as time management, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and crop management. With newfound practical knowledge, Mapula is on the path to earning her Diploma qualification and achieving her goals.

Conclusion

These case studies underscore the significant impact of SEF’s agricultural programme on individuals from diverse backgrounds. Lumka, Petros, and Mapula’s stories highlight the programme’s ability to empower, transform, and provide sustainable opportunities, aligning with SEF’s commitment to “Vuka Usebenze” and creating positive change across communities.
