Ayanda Machi’s Journey of Growth, Empowerment, and Gratitude

Ayanda Machi, from Mthwalume, Umzumbe Municipality, expresses his heartfelt gratitude for the incredible opportunity to participate in the Social Employment Fund (SEF) Programme under the mentorship of Mr. Msawenkosi Ndelu. Over the past 18 months, Ayanda has transformed his fast food business, carwash, shisanyama, and video gaming services into a thriving enterprise that now plays a pivotal role in his community.

“When I first started, I was operating from humble beginnings, selling amagwinya (fatcakes) out of a small shack. Thanks to the stipend provided by the SEF Programme, I was able to reinvest in my business, which led to its steady growth and eventual success. Today, my business stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and community support.

Throughout my entrepreneurial journey, I would often remind myself and my colleagues, ‘Asakheni umkhumbi, imvula iyeza,’—a reminder that, like Noah in the Bible, we must be prepared and work hard, knowing that success will come if we lay the right foundation. Now, I am seeing the fruits of that labour.

Being recognised by the Umzumbe Municipality as one of the growing local SMMEs is truly humbling. This recognition is a direct result of the support I received from the SEF Programme, the mentorship, and the resources that enabled me to expand my business beyond just one offering.

Recently, I also had the privilege of graduating from the University of Johannesburg Business School and the Youth Start-up Accelerator (YSA) Programme. These accomplishments were made possible due to the support I received from Lima and the SEF Programme, which enabled me to use the small funds I was given to elevate my ventures.

I now aspire to continue growing my business and contributing to the local economy. It is my sincere hope to one day collaborate with Lima to give back to the community that has stood by me throughout this journey. I am eager to explore any additional programs or initiatives that Lima may offer, which could further support the expansion of my business while providing opportunities for others in our area.

“My aim is not only to continue building my business but to uplift others in our community as well.”
