Turning Idle Land into a Thriving Agricultural Hub

Written by: Thula Zondi

Meet Andiswa Makholosa, a dedicated participant from Mount Moriah who is helping to turn possibility into something tangible and lasting. What was once an unused, empty piece of land has been transformed into a productive agricultural space, one that now grows fresh food, supports households, and brings people together around a shared purpose.

Through the support of the Social Employment Fund (SEF), Andiswa and fellow participants have worked collectively to cultivate this land, planting crops, maintaining the space, and building something that extends beyond agriculture. It has become a hub of activity, learning, and community connection, where the impact is felt not only in harvests, but in dignity and collaboration.

For Andiswa, the project represents both personal and collective growth.

“When we first came here, it was just open land. Now, it’s something we are proud of, it feeds people, and it shows what we can do when we work together.” She said.

The initiative is also contributing to food security in the area, ensuring that more families have access to fresh, locally grown produce while creating opportunities for skills development and community ownership.

She further said: “This is not just about farming. It’s about building something that belongs to all of us, something that will last and continue to support the community.”

This transformation is a reminder that meaningful work, when rooted in community and supported through programmes like SEF, can unlock real and lasting change and turning empty spaces into thriving ecosystems of opportunity.
